What Is a Doula Welcome Visit And Why It Matters
Welcoming a new baby is one of the most life-changing experiences you’ll ever have and you shouldn’t have to navigate it alone. That’s why your journey with Melancentric begins with something we call a Welcome Visit. Whether you're newly pregnant or already counting down the days to your due date, this visit sets the tone for the support and connection that follows.
What is a Welcome Visit?
The Welcome Visit is your first official meeting with your doula. It’s a time for us to get to know each other, go over your questions and goals, and begin laying the foundation for pregnancy, labor, and postpartum support. This visit can take place in person or virtually, depending on your preference and schedule.
What Happens During the Welcome Visit?
Here’s what you can expect:
1. Connection & Comfort
We start with a conversation. You get to share your story, your hopes, your concerns and anything that’s on your heart. This is a judgment-free space where your voice comes first.
2. Exploring Support Options
We walk through the services I offer:
Pregnancy support
Labor & birth support
Postpartum care
Sibling doula support (if applicable)
We talk through what you're looking for and how support can be tailored to your specific needs.
3. Medical, Emotional & Physical Support Planning
We discuss how we’ll integrate support across all levels. From working alongside your medical providers to supporting your emotional wellness and physical comfort. This is especially helpful if you're navigating high-risk pregnancy, anxiety, or are planning a medicated birth.
4. Preparing for Next Steps
We’ll go over your intake form, answer any questions about your insurance (Medi-Cal, Kaiser, Molina, IEHP, etc.), and outline how and when we’ll begin your prenatal visits. If you’re eligible for coverage, we’ll also walk through how to activate it.
When Should I Schedule My Welcome Visit?
Ideally, schedule your Welcome Visit as early as possible, especially if you’re hoping to receive continuous support throughout pregnancy and labor. But it’s never too late — even if you're in your third trimester, we can still get started.
Final Thoughts
This first visit isn’t just about logistics — it’s about building trust. It’s about making sure you feel supported, prepared, and never alone in this process. At Melancentric, we take pride in showing up fully, with care that is culturally aware, trauma-informed, and rooted in real connection.
