What to Expect During a Prenatal Visit With a Doula

If you’ve never worked with a doula before, you might be wondering:
What actually happens during a prenatal visit?
Do we talk birth plans? Practice breathing? Cry a little? (Sometimes, yes.)

At Melancentric: The Full Spectrum Doula Agency, our goal is to make you feel prepared, confident, and seen. Whether you’re giving birth at a hospital, birth center, or at home—here’s exactly what to expect when you meet with your doula during pregnancy.

What Is a Prenatal Doula Visit?

A prenatal visit is a 1-on-1 session between you and your doula—before you give birth. It’s where we start building the relationship, learning about your preferences, and setting a strong foundation of trust.

If you’re a Medi-Cal member, you’re eligible for up to 9 prenatal and postpartum doula visits, fully covered. Learn more about what Medi-Cal covers here.

Here’s What We Cover in a Prenatal Visit:

Getting to Know You

We ask about:

  • Your goals and preferences for birth

  • Your previous experiences (if any)

  • Fears, expectations, and questions

  • Your support system

Every story matters. We want to understand who you are and how we can support you best.

Birth Education + Planning

We’ll go over:

  • Stages of labor and what to expect

  • Comfort techniques (positions, breathing, massage)

  • Hospital routines and advocacy tips

  • VBAC or C-section preparation if relevant

  • How to create a birth plan (if you want one)

Melancentric doulas are trained to help you understand your choices—not make them for you.

Custom Support Planning

We also talk through:

  • When to call your doula during labor

  • How your partner (if applicable) can be involved

  • Signs of early labor and when to head to the hospital

  • Cultural, emotional, or spiritual needs

We help create a personalized support roadmap so you’re never guessing what comes next.

At-Home Prep (Optional)

Some prenatal visits can include:

  • Touring your home birth space or prep area

  • Rebozo or birth ball demos

  • Packing your hospital bag together

  • Creating a postpartum care station

What’s the Vibe Like?

It’s warm. It’s relaxed. It’s like having a conversation with someone who truly gets what you’re going through. We’re here to listen, laugh, cry, and empower.

Melancentric doulas are trained to adapt to your comfort level—we’ll meet in your home, online, or a public space that feels safe for you.
